At the University of Connecticut Homer Babbidge Library (main campus,
Storrs, CT) the National Geographic issue (with its accompanying
map) is given to our Map Cataloger. He first determines the type of
map--transect or geographic. If it's a transect, our Preservation
Dept. makes a pocket in the back of the issue for the map. If it is
a *geographic* map, he catalogs it for our map collection and
and our Preservation Dept. *tips in* a slip in the front of the
issue. This slip carries a standardized note indicating that the
accompanying map is cataloged and located in the Map Library. Of
course, the map is also accessible in our library catalog by title of
the map or by searching the journal title. This is rather elaborate
but once established we found that it offered a much more
consistent treatment then we ever had in the past. We've also been
able to apply this procedure to other types of accompanying
materials. This, of course, is not the way these maps are handled
at our smaller Regional Campus libraries. Also, 3-4 maps a year
sounds about right.
