Hi All,

We still ‘bind’ print periodicals, mostly those that we do not have online coverage for, and others that have significance to the college.  We no longer pay for professionally binding (with the exception of our college newspaper) and now bind our periodicals in Snaplock Shelf Files, https://www.demco.com/highsmith-reg-corruboard-reg-basics-snaplock-shelf-files.  Many years ago we bound periodicals in house by drilling three holes and inserting pins which made them difficult to read and impossible to make photocopies without damaging them (further).  We have converted all of the pinned bindings to boxes or had them withdrawn and recycled.  The boxes come in several sizes and make the periodicals easily accessible for inventory, copying and reading.

Best,

LeAnne

Hi all,

I’m all for not binding, but I’m wondering what you do with the print issues you’re keeping if you don’t bind them. Do they just sit on the shelf in a pile? Do you put them in boxes (Princeton files)? What is your shelf management strategy when you need/want to keep the print, but don’t actually bind them?

Thanks,

Kim

Hi everyone,

UConn holds many unbound serials - mostly backlog, as we are down to only a handful of new print receipts. Are your libraries still binding serials? Why or why not? If you do, how do you decide which serials get bound and which get shelved permanently unbound?

Thanks in advance for sharing your perspectives!

Michael
