We have also greatly reduced our serials binding in the last decade or two. These days we're really only binding Art and Photo materials (due to concerns around image quality in online versions of these publications), a few Reference titles, and titles going to our Quaker and Special Collections.
Serials titles in the general stacks that have limited retention periods go in boxes to keep them organized, and when a new issue is received, the oldest is pulled and discarded. This is especially helpful for issues too floppy to stand on their own.
