The State of Science Journalism: A Conversation with Laura Helmuth, Editor-in-Chief of
Scientific American

Laura Helmuth has been a science journalist for 20 years and became Editor-in-Chief of
Scientific American on April 13, 2020, right at the start of the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Prior to joining
Scientific American, she was the Science and Health Editor for The Washington Post and has held positions at
National Geographic, Slate, Smithsonian, and Science. Laura was the President of the National Association of Science Writers from 2016 to 2018 and a board member from 2012 to 2016. She holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from
the University of California at Berkeley.
This free webinar will feature Laura discussing her years as a science journalist, tracing topics, styles and her personal stories. She will also offer insights into her plans for steering
Scientific American in the future. There will be plenty of time allowed for her to field questions from webinar participants.
