At the University of Mississippi, we use the A-to-Z list integrated with our discovery and link resolver to provide title/platform level holdings information to the public. We used to import that information into our bibliographic catalog, but even doing that import weekly caused the information to be out of sync. So we longer display ejournal holdings in the catalog at all. We do keep manually updated records of perpetual purchases in the order records attached to suppressed bib records in the ILS, as a back up to the dynamic holdings reflected in the knowledgebase.

All the best,

Subject: [SERIALST] Managing electronic serial coverage info

[EXTERNAL]

Hi fellow serials folks!

I'm hoping to unpack the black box that is summary holding (MFHD) records for electronic serials. To this end I would love it if you could share any info about (and/or links to if that's quicker!) policy and workflows your library has for creating, managing and displaying coverage information for electronic serials when you have access through more than one provider. Also, whether or not you think your current solution is working for you and your users.

Feel free to share on or off-list; happy to share responses with those interested.

Cheers!

Abigail

Specific questions/context for those interested in reading further:

  •
  • Does your
  • library create MFHD records for electronic serials?
  •
    •
    • If so, do
    • you create an individual MFHD for each provider, or one MFHD record per title with a cumulative coverage statement for all providers?
    •
    •
    • How do you
    • keep MFHD records up to date as your access to e-serials changes?
    •
  •
  • If you don't
  • create MFHD records, how do you record and display coverage information for e-serial titles?
  •
    •
    • Do you record
    • coverage information in the bib record?
    •
    •
    • Do you
    • rely on a link resolver integration with your discovery platform to display coverage and access points?
    •

Our library uses a custom script to build a current cumulative coverage statement for each e-serial (using data harvested from our link resolver) which runs weekly and updates the bib 856 and MFHD 866 fields. This script, however, is fragile and we are currently looking at alternatives. How are others managing?
