Hi Charlie, all,

That’s a great question.  When we were weeding a few years ago, I reached out and asked our Elsevier rep about whether Elsevier was confident that those archives would remain open in perpetuity.  The response I received was that Elsevier fully intends to keep them open, but that if future economic conditions deteriorate at the company, they may put them back behind a paywall.  Also, some of those are society titles, and if the society takes them back or decides they want to charge for them, it would be an option and Elsevier would need to work with them.

All that is to say, I retained print on those titles (where we didn’t have other archival access).

Thanks,

Sarah

Subject: [SERIALST] Weeding Print Journals with OA Archives

Hi All,

I’m wondering about people’s thoughts on weeding print journals whose archives are open access?

For example, some large publishers like Elsevier have open archives with a moving wall (like JSTOR):

https://www.elsevier.com/about/open-science/open-access/open-archive

Are you confident enough that these archives will remain open in the long term to weed the print volumes? Or are you concerned that they might put up a paywall at some point?

Thanks.

Charlie Remy
