ALCTS e-Forum: Metadata Application Profiles for Creating Library Data

Metadata application profiles are used for the production of library data, and often play a significant role in structuring the data used in libraries. They can take many forms, including human-readable documents and machine-actionable profiles. Drafting profiles can be done using word processors, for example, or in integrated development environments for the purpose of use with computer applications. They can be written as free text, or using a highly-structured syntax. They can be used with content management systems, for creating linked data in the Web, or in a variety of other metadata implementation scenarios. Join us for a discussion about the past, present, and future of metadata application profiles.

Moderators

Theo Gerontakos is the Interim Head of the Metadata and Cataloging Initiatives at the University of Washington Libraries. He has been a Metadata Librarian since 2001. He is currently designing methods for automating metadata application profiles, is helping develop UW Libraries' RDA application profile, and regularly consults on projects that require metadata assistance.


Crystal Clements is a Science Cataloger at the University of Washington Libraries. She has been working on local RDA-compatible metadata application profiles as part of the UW’s LD4P2 Subgrant Project over the past year, and is interested in practical library applications of linked data technologies.


Ben Riesenberg is a Metadata Librarian at the University of Washington Libraries. He has created and adapted application profiles for use in digital collections and open data publishing, and is currently part of the team working to implement RDA application profiles for cataloging in a linked-data environment at the UW Libraries.



What Is an e-Forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.
