Assistant Professor/Metadata Librarian at the Mississippi State University Libraries
Position Function:
The Mississippi State University (MSU) Libraries seek applicants for an entry-level tenure-track, Assistant Professor/Metadata Librarian position. This tenure-track position
collaborates with relevant personnel and units in order to further discovery and access to resources in a variety of formats within the MSU Libraries. This position reports to the Coordinator of Monographic Cataloging.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of materials in a variety of formats, using MARC, RDA, AACR2, LCCS/LCSH, OCLC and the Library’s integrated library system; resolves discrepancies; maintains database integrity.
- Maintains current knowledge of the development of national and international standards for metadata and linked data.

Develops policies, best practices, and procedures, especially in the area of emerging formats, including metadata standards.

Creates and maintains metadata in collaboration with other team members.

Assists paraprofessional staff in problem solving.

Designs and implements workflows.

Proposes, writes, and maintains local metadata/cataloging documentation.

Contributes bibliographic and authority records to PCC’s BIBCO, NACO, and SACO programs.
- Maintains authority control of records to ensure discoverability.
- Keeps current on revisions to metadata/cataloging rules and trends.

Evaluates the potential use of new services and technologies, as requested.

Provides input for establishing cataloging policies and procedures.

Brings revisions and trends to the attention of the Coordinator of Monographic Cataloging and assists in the implementation of changes in the department.

Meets Library and University requirements for promotion and tenure in the areas of librarianship, research, service and collegiality.

Works with one or more academic units on campus in the capacity of library liaison for the purposes of collection development and outreach.

Participates in Library and University-wide committees as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program.

1-3 years of relevant library experience, including at least one (1) year of experience with metadata creation.
- Must be familiar with an automated library system such as SIRSI DYNIX, a bibliographic utility such as OCLC and with library technology
in general.
- Must have strong analytical and organizational skills as well as effective interpersonal, collegial and communication skills (both oral
and written)
- Must be able to set and adjust priorities and workflows in a dynamic and changing environment and accept new challenges in order to realize
departmental and library goals.
- Must demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as part of a team emphasizing a good balance between quality and productivity.
- Must show continuing commitment to professional development and growth.
- Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for promotion and tenure.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years minimum experience performing original and copy cataloging in an academic library.
- Cataloging coursework beyond the core or introductory level.
- Familiarity with SIRSI, OCLC, RDA, metadata schema such as Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, and linked data such as BIBFRAME.
- Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language and a second master’s degree.
