Hi Cynthia,

I’m a Sierra user, so I recognize your screenshots. I apologize if I’m repeating what someone else has already sent to you.

Because we just reviewed all of our codes in preparation for migrating from Millennium to Sierra, I know that the SCode1 and SCode2 are library defined. Meaning not every library uses these codes in this way. It also means you can decide what codes are in these fields and how to define their use.

It looks like a predecessor librarian tried to imitate the leader codes for MARC Format for Holdings Data which includes codes for completeness and status. So for definitions of these existing codes, you might look at the standard for MFHD. The question about what “Complete” means will still be confusing.

Happy to try to help more, if I can.

Subject: [SERIALST] Basic question - asking late, but never too late...

[EXTERNAL]

So I’ve been responsible for periodicals as well as e-resources for a long time now, but e-resources have gotten much more of my attention.

But I’ve lived with the checkin record encoding that I inherited for a long time.  Now I’m going to make some changes, but I want to ask what is common practice.  The 2 serial codes of concern in the checkin record (Innovative) are

Serial code 1 – COMPLETENESS                                Serial code 2 – Status

I have only been keeping up Status, distinguishing between Active and Inactive.  I have not been recording COMPLETENESS.

I have never known what was intended by COMP(DISC’TN) – seems that it should just be DISCONT. By Publisher, and the scode1 will tell you whether it’s COMPLETE or not.  And I’ve only inferred that they meant for DISCONT to be “discontinued by publisher” and if it’s cancelled, it would be “INACTIVE”.  But I’m thinking of making a separate category for CANCELLED By BPL.

I don’t know why I’ve hestitated to add a category for CANCELLED (so far I’ve just put them under INACTIVE), but I thought I’d ask you all what you do.
