Dean of the James E. Walker Library
Middle Tennessee State University is seeking a creative and dynamic individual to lead the institution's James E. Walker Library and invites applications for the position of Dean. Located 35 miles south of Nashville in historic Murfreesboro,
Tennessee, one of the fastest growing cities in the state, MTSU currently enrolls more than 21,000 students. More information about MTSU and the Walker Library is available at https://library.mtsu.edu/.
Appointment date is open to availability of successful candidate. Tenure upon appointment possible.
Responsibilities:
Develop collaboratively a shared vision for the library that contributes to the university's goals for student success, high-impact learning experiences and advancing the research agenda;
Administer the resources of the library (personnel, collections, facility, finances, technology) to align with the vision of the library;
Articulate a vision for the acquisition and delivery of resources and information services to meet the instructional, research, and outreach needs of the university's faculty, students, staff, and other constituencies;
Position the library strategically at the forefront of peer institutions through innovative programs and services;
Select and manage technologies that create positive user experiences;
Recruit, hire, and evaluate library faculty and staff and provide for their continuing professional development;
Foster an organizational climate based on respect, transparency, service, results, teamwork, diversity, and innovation;
Develop and promote viable partnerships with the general public, government agencies, professional organizations and networks, and state and regional libraries, including consortial relationships with academic libraries at the regional
and national level;
Assume an instrumental role in planning, developing budgets and policies, and decision-making as a member of the University Deans' Cabinet, Deans and Directors' Council, and University committees; and
Secure external funding to enrich the library's programs and support special projects.
Required Education
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library/information science.
Required Related Experience
Strong record of professional librarianship, scholarship, and service appropriate to the rank of tenured professor in the library
Successful progressive experience in library administration with at least five years at department unit level or higher in an academic or research library, including supervisory responsibilities and budget management
Strong strategic planning and program development experience
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership for a large comprehensive university library with undergraduate and graduate programs and a diverse student body
Record of developing a culture of continuous improvement that is in alignment with ALA best practices
Demonstrated ability in creating and sustaining partnerships with library constituencies, internal and external to the university
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, gender, and multicultural issues
Demonstrated knowledge of traditional library functions, emerging technologies, and trends in higher education that impact libraries
Clear understanding of and strong commitment to library development
Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Other Desirable
Additional advanced degree(s)
Demonstrated success in advancing efforts to secure grants and contracts for the library
Experience or demonstrated skill in leading a broad and intensive fundraising effort
Record of increasing community support for the library
