To make like more confusing, when I first arrived at my current library, I found the practice for journals of an association were under the association name. So Journal of the American Medical Association was under "A", as if the name were: "American Medical Association, Journal of". Ditto for Transactions of... and Proceedings of and Bulletin of.
When we had to do a massive reshifting of the bound journals for another reason, we fixed this.

Our principle now is that, aside from the leading article, the way a computer (i.e., our A-to-Z list) would alphabetize it is the way we do.  That keeps the rule very simple to explain especially to our student shelvers.

Yes, I suspect we'd still have confusion either way.

I like the suggestion from Kristi of having a list available.

We do the same here and, yes, we have the same issues of confusion but I wonder if it would be the same no matter which way they were filed.

Subject: [SERIALST] Words like the, of, and for in titles

Hello,

How does everyone handle words like the, of, and for when shelving journals?

When a journal starts with "the," we ignore that.  When the words "the," "of," or "for" appear within a title, they are considered for shelving purposes.

Still, people struggle to find some journals like Journal of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing which comes after Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.

I was curious if there was a best practice.

Thanks,
