Hi Leslie,

Students are great, unfortunately they graduate after you get them perfectly trained!

I know we are fortunate to still have 5 staff members. I have broached the subject of adding more responsibility to my assistant but she always balks after initially saying she is willing.  And, I don’t have the time to push the issue!

Thanks for your comments.

LeAnne,

My assistant processed all the payments for the library before her retirement. I now have a student who does all my check-ins for serials and I give her more as she has capacity to learn and understand new things. Since I’m now a technical services department of 1, anything I can train a student to do frees me up to do the things they can’t. Yes, I supervise and correct work, but I can’t do it all either. Other areas (circulation and reference and the director) help out with bigger projects like weeding, shifting, and other project tasks as they come up. Circulation students can also be enlisted to take on some of those tasks to help with collection management.  Happy to chat more if you’re interested.

We are a very small library staff.  I have one assistant who does daily check-in, claims, organization of periodical shelves including recycling of newspapers and some periodicals, gathering stats, supervising student workers, standing order processing, withdrawals of deselected titles and some gift cataloging.

I wish she could help me with invoice payments.

What all does a staff member in Serials do at your library?  I'm especially interested in any non-financial tasks.   I'm also interested in any tasks that you *wished* were done but currently aren't (for whatever reason).

Additionally, are there any tasks that a cataloguer (a librarian) would normally do but that now a staff member does?

I'd appreciate any input.

Thank you.
