We migrated from Voyager to Alma in January 2016. There are two options for periodical check-in in Alma:

 

Option 1: Use the receiving continuations line which creates an item record. Benefits are this is quick, reasonable accurate, displays each issue that has arrived in Primo and the items can easily be collapsed when binding. Downsides: no effective claiming within Alma and since it is not predictive, no notification that something has stopped coming unless someone notices and reports it. We have used this method for 2 years and are satisfied that it functions for our needs. We still check in around 1,000 print journals for the campus, but they are on a downward trend. Check-in is linked to the POL-Line so payments can be tracked.

 

Option 2: You can setup predictive check in in ALMA using the appropriate MARC tags. This became available in 2016 and has continued to improve going by comments on listservs and at conferences. When we looked at it, it seemed too labor intensive to setup and then maintain, the Primo display contained volumes that had not yet arrived in the library (a big negative for our public service), and claiming wasn’t quite there.

 

I would say that neither method is as robust particularly for claiming as you might find in ILS systems, but they both can work for libraries even ones still receiving a fair amount of print. Our overall policy is to support print, but encourage transition to online wherever possible and so far this has been working for us. – Sincerely, Kate Seago, University of Kentucky.
