Dear colleagues
I’d be interested to find out how you are dealing with the problem of excessive session duration blocks that we have been experiencing since the beginning of the year with Mary Ann Liebert, Taylor and Francis, CRCNetBase, World Scientific and Scitation/AIP Publishing.
According to the publishers this is a new security measure against piracy. If a user walks away from the computer without closing the browser window, the IP adress gets blocked. Obviously, on a university campus this happens all the time. We then have to get in touch with the provider in order to get unblocked. We have been dealing with this issue on an almost daily basis and are swamped with complaints.

It seems to me that the thinking is somewhat flawed here. If our patrons are constantly prevented from accessing material and they find out that access via other means is seamless, it doesn’t take much imagination to figure out where they will go in the future.

How are you dealing with is problem?
Do you feel that this security measure is in compliance with the licenses we have?

Any feedback Is greatly appreciated.
Marion
