Hello,

Thank you everyone for your responses.  This will be very helpful.  I'm hoping to get time to look at Cataloger's Desktop.

When I came into the position last year, the access database was a bit of a mess.  We had been using it since 2000 I think.

The fields I have are:

Title
Format (Print, Online, Print+Online, Newspaper, Membership)

Status (Current, Discontinued+Year, Withdrawn+Year, Gift)

Previous Status (I found this useful, but I can't remember why :)  Maybe one example is if the current status is Discontinued14, you can set previous status to Gift so you know it wasn't really cancelled.  There are other ways to keep that information though.  I'm going to keep this field because I know it was useful for something :)

Print Holdings

Full-Text:I don't know yet if this is necessary to maintain.  My student pasted each print and print+online title we have into serial solutions.  If there are holdings in our databases or through Electronic Journal Systems (which we use to purchase individual electronic subscriptions), I pasted that information here.  I'm thinking now it's unnecessary and that if we're looking at a particular print title to maybe change to online, we could just look that up in serial solutions.

Notes: Here is where I put text like "Continued by Obesity and Weight Management" for example.  There are a few different kinds of notes about weird, exceptions with certain journals.

Barcode: We have one barcode per journal title (not individual issues or volumes).

Department: Art, History, Nursing, etc.  It's useful because in adding new programs, people want to know how many nursing journals we have, for example.

Non-EBSCO Source.  Almost all of our journals are purchased through EBSCO.  I think Harvard Business Review stopped working with them.  And we get a few gifts.  So, I'll say "Gift from Jenny Smith, former science faculty."  You could include contact info if you send reminders.

Location: It says "Current issues in the current periodicals area" "All issues on back shelves" or "Current Art issues in Art Room"

Missing: Any missing issues.

Full-Text Article Views+Year (Stats we get from Electronic Journal Subscriptions)

Print Use+Year

Cost+Year

Bound: What volumes happen to be bound

Jason,

I noticed you mentioned that you are using an Access database.  Would you mind sharing the fields you use?  I'm in the progress of reviewing Access.  Had used it 10 yrs ago & was thinking of creating a database to track current subscriptions, etc.

Hi,

I am new to serials, and curious about title changes.  For example, we subscribe to Home Healthcare Nurse (holdings are v. 12(2) 1994 - Present).  It has changed it's name to Home Healthcare Now.

We keep an access database of all current, discontinued, and weeded journal titles.  Is there a consensus and how to treat journal title changes?  Do you tend to make a new record for it in your database and keep a separate Home Healthcare Nurse record?

When listing holdings for Home Healthcare Now, would you say 12(2) 1994 - Present, or would you say the holdings are 2015-Present?

Thanks for all your help!
