Wow – way back when, I was taught there was one way and one way
only to enter holdings data (for the example below):
v.1-10 (2000-2009)
OR
v.1-v.10:no.3 (2000-2009:Apr.) if missing last part of v.10
OR
v.1-v.10:no.3, no.5-6 (2000-2009:Apr., Oct.-Dec.) <- actually a little sloppy, ideally v.10:no.5-6 should be on 2nd line.
Condense what you can, elaborate if partial, volume, enumeration, year, month in order (or Bd., Ann., iss., etc.). Use 853/863 as much as possible, only use
866 if extensive, ‘broken’ holdings.
No wonder it can be tough for patrons (and sometimes us) to make sense of serial holdings.
Miss those days, but I’m an old…

These standards are for the birds!! What’s with the one letter abbreviations that are only used in the library world?? Great for the common man
to understand and what’s with putting the volume before the year? Every filing practice puts brackets and numbers before letters…..

What format does everyone use to list their volume and issue in the catalog?
Example: v.21(3) (1994) - v.27(6) (1998)
Do you say "no." for the issue number?
Thank you
