Hi Jessica,

Other folks may have more useful info for you, but here’s what I have to offer:

First Question:

We’ve had several JSTOR packages added over the past 5-7 years, and I’ve always done pretty much what you’re doing, for any titles where we discarded all of the print – look for the e-record and overlay it onto our print record. The good news is that you can usually find the e-record OCLC # in the 776 of a print record, so that saves a little bit of time in searching.

You can also flip the record in voyager by adding/editing the necessary fields; I prefer not to do it that way because with our current ILS (Koha), it’s a lot easier to overlay the record than to add/change controlled fields (ex. we’d need to add 776’s for the print version).

Second Question:

We did a journal inventory of sorts when I first started working here. Our journals aren’t barcoded either. What we did was download our serials holdings from OCLC and use that report as a “check-off” list. It was time consuming, but I think it worked really well. We found journals that needed to be added to our catalog, journals that we needed to add our holdings onto in OCLC, and many titles we just didn’t have anymore, but for some reason our holdings were still attached in OCLC (and in some cases, we still had the record in the catalog too).

Hope some of this is helpful – good luck!!

Subject: [SERIALST] JSTOR weed and inventory

I have a two part problem/question. My institution recently began a JSTOR weed and due to previous decisions all of our links to JSTOR content was on print records. I have to find each individual record in OCLC and import it into Voyager and  create the holdings. Is there an easier way to do this? Has anyone else done a JSTOR weed and needed to bring in electronic records into their catalog?

Secondly, after we complete the JSTOR weed, our institution will begin an inventory. None of our journals are barcoded so I was wondering if anyone else has done an inventory on non-barcoded items. How easy or difficult was the process?

Any tips or suggestions on either the JSTOR weed or inventory would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
