It depends on how your ILS works in general, and possibly also how you’ve configured it. We use Aleph from Ex Libris, and in that system them item record *is* the checkin record. There is a subscription record, and item records for the issues included in the subscription are attached to it. The item record has an expected arrival date and an arrival date, and the claim report we run is looking for a combination of no arrival date (so not yet checked in) plus the expected arrival date is past today and past however many days we set as the claim delay in the subscription record.

Jessica, what ILS are you using? They all work differently, so you’ll likely get better answers if you identify your system.

Without a checkin record, there is no way for the system to prompt you that an issue is late or lost. If there is a problem with a subscription, you won’t find out about it until someone goes looking for that title……..

We've recently switched from creating checkin cards for our print journals to creating item records for them instead. Do any of you have experience with creating item records for print journals?
