Job Summary:

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position as assistant professor/collection development coordinator (CDC) in the University Libraries.

Reporting to the dean of University Libraries, the CDC directs and coordinates the collection development program.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties of this position include the following:

Provides educational outreach to all departments to ensure broadest participation of university faculty in collection assessment and development

Provides leadership, training and guidance to collection advisory committee, bibliographers and departmental liaisons as well as coordinates all collection development activities

Performs ongoing assessment of collections and their use in collaboration and support of the academic departments and disciplines of the university

Researches and evaluates consortia purchasing opportunities; works with vendors and publishers to negotiate pricing and subscription terms for resources

Coordinates trials, presentations and training for resources

Plans collections budgets, develops budget reports and analysis including projections and needs assessments in collaboration with appropriate constituencies

Develops proposals to integrate new technologies, processes and programs to improve efficiency and service

Coordinates policies and procedures with collections personnel throughout the University Libraries system, including coordinating the maintenance and regular review of collection development policies and procedures

Serves as central contact and communicator with academic faculty and administrators regarding collection development; seeks opportunities for funding cooperatives

Participates in the construction of the annual acquisitions budget of approximately $3 million and monitors its expenditure in collaboration with the Library Acquisitions Budget Committee

Provides timely information on fund allocations, expenditures and procedures to collection advisory committee, academic departmental faculty liaisons and others

Engages in research and scholarly activity to fulfill the expectations for tenure and promotion

Provides service to the Libraries, the university, the profession and the community to fulfill the expectations for tenure and promotion  

Minimum Qualifications:

MLS from an ALA-accredited institution or international equivalent

At least three years of experience in collection development in an academic or research library

Demonstrated successful experience with the principles and practices of collection development including collection assessment and data analysis

Knowledge of current collection development issues and trends at academic and research libraries, including understanding of emerging information technology and its applications for collection development

Managerial experience and demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment

Demonstrated experience in successful budget management

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

Ability to work effectively and creatively in a culturally diverse, technologically complex and rapidly changing library and university system  

Preferred Qualifications:

Substantive course work or secondary degree in an academic field

Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated library system
