ALCTS webinar: When Opportunity Knocks? Challenges Associated with Implementing Linked Data in Libraries

Date: May 22, 2013

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

This hour-long webinar takes the discussion of linked data in libraries a step further. The benefits that linked data represents are incontestable: making relationships in metadata explicit, using web–friendly markup, and liberating libraries from their current data silos are all part of the appeal. Integrating library data onto the semantic web is imminent, but what are some of the obstacles that libraries will have to overcome? Linked data standards, multiple URIs, sophisticated query language issues, and the challenge of navigating a different set of data silos all will require libraries to re-think their approach as we move toward linked data.

Who should attend? Those looking to implement linked data solutions at their libraries.

Presenter: Heather Lea Moulaison, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science and Learning Technologies. Dr. Moulaison’s teaching and research interests include organization of information (including cataloging and metadata) and emerging technologies in libraries (including linked data and cloud computing). Dr. Moulaison earned her PhD at Rutgers University, earned an MSLIS from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and also earned an MA in Interdisciplinary French Studies from UIUC.
