You can take a look at an article in The Serials Librarian v.57: no.1-2 Jul/Sep 2009 pg.137-148 “A Web-based Usage Counter for Serial Collections. The link to download the files for the counting software can
be found here http://serialcount.kent.edu/download.cfm. The article explains how the software works. We have been using the software for a few years and can generate reports for time period or by journal
etc. The article points out the difficulties with counting usage methods and you are right, none are completely accurate and shouldn’t be relied upon as the only source for evaluating usage of journals.

Subject: [SERIALST] Tracking Print Issues
Does anyone have any creative strategies for tracking use of print issues, whether loose or bound?
Right now we rely on scanning anything patrons leave lying around, but there’s a ton of self-shelving going on. I don’t think it’s very accurate. I was just wondering how others garnered their stats on this.
