Engineering Liaison / Instruction and Reference Librarian

                              

The Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is recruiting for an Engineering Liaison/Instruction and Reference Librarian with a strong commitment to information literacy instruction, user education services, and assessment.  Reporting to the Head of the Instruction and Research Services Department, this librarian should be highly productive, innovative, and technologically adept, as well as committed to the goals for the Library’s instruction program, including embedding information literacy across the university’s curriculum, developing online learning objects, and integrating new technologies and e-pedagogy. 

    

Teaching and Liaison Responsibilities

 

The Instruction and Reference/Engineering Liaison Librarian will provide instruction, reference, collection development, and outreach liaison activities to UAA’s School of Engineering, including Geomatics, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program.  Outreach is a significant component of this position, and the successful candidate will be expected to coordinate the Library’s involvement in orientation activities for incoming and prospective students. 

 

Teaching responsibilities include actively promoting, developing, and delivering face-to-face and distance instruction in various formats.  The nine faculty librarians in the Library’s Instruction and Research Services Department teach library research classes and workshops for their respective liaison programs, and provide instruction for General Education Requirement (GER) and developmental courses (e.g., introduction to composition, college survival skills, preparatory English).  This position will participate in a teaching rotation for LS 101, an online one-credit introduction to library research course.  Research instruction is also provided at the reference desk for students, staff, faculty, and members of the public in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, along with in-depth research consultations for liaison areas.  Hours for instruction and research services will include days, nights, and weekends.

 

Liaison collection development activities will include collaborating with the Collection Development Department and other subject liaisons to build digital and print collections in support of teaching, learning, and research.  Liaison responsibilities include selecting materials, with special emphasis on identifying electronic resources for engineering, as well as reviewing and weeding collections.

 

As a member of the faculty, the Engineering Librarian is expected to participate in professional organizations, faculty meetings and governance, and continual learning/professional development opportunities.  The successful candidate will have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, a strong commitment to quality customer service, and be expected to meet all of the Library faculty requirements for tenure and promotion.

 

 

Required Education

• Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program or equivalent by August 1, 2013

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

 

• Evidence of knowledge of, or experience working with, engineering information resources; or education in Engineering, Geomatics, GIS, technological areas, or equivalent discipline; or work experience in engineering or related field
• Teaching, training, or presenting experience
• Evidence of knowledge of Information Literacy concepts
• Experience with web-based instructional technologies, such as screen-casting software, and/or course management systems
• Experience with online resources, tools, and services, including databases, catalogs, full text sources, web 2.0 (including social media)
• Knowledge of marketing and outreach strategies
• Evidence of participation in collaborative work

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

 

• Experience providing reference services to diverse populations
• Knowledge of instructional design, curriculum development, or online teaching

• Collection development experience
• Knowledge of scholarly communication trends in engineering or related technological disciplines, and/or government information sources related to engineering
• Work experience in an academic library or research institute

 

 

Salary:  Salary $64,000 minimum annually, excellent health and life insurance, retirement, and tuition waiver benefits; Represented by bargaining unit.
