The Metadata Resource Management and Discovery, Head, supervises a unit of staff and librarians involved with the cataloging/metadata workflows that support discovery and access of print and electronic resources. Key responsibilities include scheduling and coordinating bulk loads of records and data, planning and execution of data maintenance projects (e.g. shelf ready products, library holdings, mass transfers to storage facility), and manage the staff and the day-to-day operations of the Unit. The incumbent serves as the cataloging technical adviser to the Library User Experience Group on the development and enhancement of the Libraries' online resource discovery tools. This work will involve working across divisions to collaboratively develop and coordinate the various cataloging/metadata related workflows that facilitate ubiquitous access and discovery and continuously evaluate the Libraries' online resource discovery environment. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Advises on enhancements to the Libraries' discovery layer and knowledge base, making policy and procedural changes that improve access. Works collaboratively across the Libraries to develop and implement strategies and innovative solutions to improve the user experience and maximize system functionality. 


2. Manages multiple incoming work streams from different sources. Deploys unit's staff resources intelligently to maintain balance among competing workflows and to prevent the development of backlogs. Designs and implements quality control measures that ensure the Unit's output meets established quality standards. Maintains statistics related to the workflows, databases, and collections.


3. Utilizes transformative technologies and automated processes to accomplish data maintenance tasks whenever possible. Maximizes the use of vendor services that provide shelf-ready cataloging, MARC record updates, and authority control. 


4. Develops standard maintenance policies and procedures. Creates and maintains documentation in the department's website for such policies and procedures. Oversees maintenance of MARC tag tables, development and central coordination of MACRO Express files, and testing of client upgrades. 


5. Designs and executes plans for special projects that the Unit is called upon to undertake (e.g. mass transfer/withdrawal projects, record load projects). 


6. Keeps up with trends in the field. Responds effectively to new initiatives and changes in the library's technical processing and discovery environments (e.g. migration from AACR2 to RDA, non-MARC workflows, linked data related projects). 


7. Serves as liaison with other library units, staff, and users with regard to data maintenance issues as well as those related to bulk collections and gifts. Responds to requests for service and questions related to the Unit's policies and procedures.  

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE, Required: 

1. Education:  Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program or similar credentials. 

2. Years of experience:  A minimum of three years professional cataloging/metadata experience in a library serving similar clientele. 

3. A minimum of two years supervisory experience with evidence of successful and innovative management and results-oriented operations. Demonstrated abilities to creatively work with library faculty, staff and others.

 

4. Knowledge and skills related to data massaging and development of scripts for automated data. 


5. Familiarity with the acquisitions and cataloging modules of an integrated library system, link resolvers, and associated knowledge base. Similar level of familiarity with OCLC's cataloging related systems and services.

 

6. Working knowledge of XML, HTML, and other mark-up schema.

 
7. Expert knowledge of the rules and practices in descriptive cataloging, authority control, subject headings assignment, and classification, as followed in U.S. academic libraries. Expert knowledge of the MARC21 standards.

 
8. Ability to manage large, complex projects from initial design stage to full completion. 


9. Awareness of current developments and issues in bibliographic control and automation. Familiarity with current and emerging standards in library metadata, including FRBR, RDA, MODS, ONIX, linked data and RDF. 


10. Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, production-oriented environment, and the ability to adapt quickly and work under pressure to meet deadlines and production goals. 


11. Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and manage staff. Ability to lead a diverse group in a positive and constructive manner, and be able to mold such a group into an effective team. 


12. Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE, Preferred:

 

1. Advanced knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
