The Mississippi State University Libraries seek innovative and dynamic applicants for a tenure track, Assistant Professor/Serials Cataloger position. Duties include contributing to the development of a virtual research database by performing original and copy cataloging of serials representing all levels of difficulty, all subjects and languages, and all formats according to AACR2, LCRIs, LCSH, LC classification and MARC formats. Performs authority work on names and series in accordance with local and national standards. Solves problems arising from obsolete or incorrect information appearing in bibliographic and holdings records. Provides input for establishing serial cataloging policies and procedures. Participates in and leads special projects as needed and assists the serials unit paraprofessional staff in problem solving. Meets library and university requirements for promotion and tenure in the areas of librarianship, research, service and collegiality. Works with one or more academic units on campus in the capacity of library liaison for the purposes of collection development and outreach. Serves as a Cataloging Department resource person concerning serials cataloging related issues. Keeps current on revisions to cataloging rules and trends in cataloging practices. Brings revisions and trends to the attention of the Coordinator of Serials and assists in the implementation of the changes in the department. Evaluates the potential use of new services and technologies as requested. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Coordinator of Serials.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and at least two years of experience in an academic library. Must be familiar with an integrated library system, a bibliographic utility, and with computers in general. The applicant must have strong analytical and organizational skills as well as effective interpersonal, collegial, and communication skills (both oral and written). Must be able to set and adjust priorities and work flows in a dynamic and changing environment and accept new challenges in order to realize departmental and library goals. Must demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as part of a team emphasizing a good balance between quality and productivity. Must show continuing commitment to professional development and growth.
Preferred: Familiarity with SIRSI, OCLC, and RDA. Knowledge of AACR2 Rules for serials cataloging (print and electronic) as well as CONSER cataloging guidelines. Familiarity with MARC21 format holdings. Have a second master’s degree.
ENVIRONMENT: The Technical Services Department is led by the Associate Dean of Technical Services and consists of Acquisitions, Cataloging, Electronic Resources, Theses and Dissertations Format Review, Binding and Serials. The Serials Cataloging unit is committed to creating timely, accurate and full bibliographic access in support of a comprehensive research library program. This position works closely with the Coordinator of Serials and with other members of the Serials unit, as well as the Cataloging Department and the Electronic Resources Department.
