Before you hit “send” on that angry letter to JBJS,
check with your subscription agent. According to
JBJS Marketing Director Michelle Hache, they’ll be
limiting the paid archive to include only 1889-1995
… thus returning the years 1996-1999 to the current
access one gets with a subscription. They are now
notifying subscription agents about the change.
Don’t know if she’d want me to reprint or excerpt
the e-mail she sent me, but that’s what it said.
Yay. SW

Hi Susan
I agree, this is a shame. Not just because of the generous open archive which was available to researchers until now, but also because of the moving wall of back access you report. The licensed
content may well cover you under a clause of ‘years you have paid for’ if you had a subscription going back to 1996 – I would certainly look into this – and unless there is a good reason to withdraw some years of a frontfile when a title moves to another publisher
(I suppose in this case it could be argued that 1889-1999 is a better range to promote for one-off purchase than 1889-1995) the rights you have previously enjoyed should be honoured on transfer.
I hope the move from open archive to one-off payments is not symptomatic of a wider trend !
Best wishes

Subject: [SERIALST] Archive of J Bone & Joint Surg (Am) no longer free
I’ve just received confirmation that, beginning in January,
the formerly free archive of
Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery
(American ed.) will now require a one-time purchase.
What bothers me is that this archive is considered to include
the years 1889-1999. Until now, our paid access included the
years 1996 to the present; after this change, it’ll only be 2000
to the present. So four years we thought we’d already paid
for – 1996, 1997, 1998, & 1999 – are being taken away.
It’s happened before, but that doesn’t make it any righter!
Even if a title changes hands, moving to a different publisher,
doesn’t the new publisher have an obligation to honor the
agreements of the former publisher? SW
