Hi, Liane

I will openly confess that I am never sure if I am counting serials correctly for any of these statistical surveys, but I do include titles that we receive as part of a publisher's package.

Subject: [SERIALST] NCES Current Serial Subscriptions?

Howdy all,

We’re comparing our NCES figures with others and are finding our count for Current Serial Subscriptions (Item 404) is significantly lower than other institutions that should be more comparable. We’re thinking we’re pulling the numbers differently from folks. In case you have some time on your  hands, and are willing to dig around and share, we’d be interested to know how others are gathering the stats for this question:

Current serial subscriptions (item 404): “Report the total number of titles in all formats. If the title comes in both paper and electronic form, count it twice. Count each individual title if it is received as a part of a publisher’s package. Include paper and microfilm government documents issued serially if they are accessible through the library’s catalog. Report indexing and abstracting services that may contain full-text in item 405.”

We’re thinking maybe folks are including all the titles they receive as part of a “big deal”/publishers packages, and we’re not?

Any insight on how your institution derives the answer for this question is much appreciated.

I’m  happy to share responses with the list.

Best,

Liane
