I’m very new to Horizon, but are you suggesting a means of Horizon utilizing the 853 fields to establish the prediction patterns? I was told there was no way to do that, but it would save us a lot of effort, as we just began using the Serials module, and transferred data from another vendor who only provided the MARC records on the transfer.

Hi Lynn,

If you're setting up a prediction pattern, the frequency is bimonthly. Regarding the second level enumeration caption, the number of issues per year is 6. This field refers to the number of units per next higher level (in this case, the number of issues per volume, which is 6) rather the total numbered issues in a year (which can vary depending on how the publisher combines enumeration and chronology).

Volume and number are the first and second level enumeration captions, and year and month are the first and second level chronology captions, respectively. You would combine enumeration and chronology when naming each issue, e.g., v.43:no.7/8 (2012:July/Aug.).

Our network recently moved to a new platform. Our old vendor was III and after the kinks worked out, entering serials data was a breeze. This software (Evergreen) needs MFHD captions and patterns. I have a journal (American Libraries) that I'm trying to enter and for the life of me I cannot get any code to make it do what I want it to do. This publishes 6 times per year, Jan/Feb. etc. It's numbering is 1/2, 3/4 etc. so even though it is only 6 hard copies, there are 12 issues.

Does anyone know about captioning and patterning that you would be willing to share? I've found several training manuals (Yale has a nice one), but I haven't found an example that works.

Any advice would be appreciated. I know it's Friday - ignore it til Monday!
