| | | | Major Duties | | Under general supervision, the Adaptive Cataloger performs original descriptive and subject cataloging and classification of complex materials using standard cataloging and classification tools. Specializes in original cataloging of serials and other continuing resources, electronic books, and archival materials for Special Collections, Urban Archives and University Archives. Performs adaptive cataloging of library materials in all subjects and formats; provides specialized and technical support to Cataloging staff in tasks related to bibliographic control, authority control, and database maintenance. Assists in the development and application of cataloging policies and procedures; assists in training new or existing staff in cataloging and oversees the creation and maintenance of Library holdings information for continuing resources. Responsible for re-cataloging materials requiring extensive research and problem solving; serves as resource to staff regarding cataloging of continuing resources and specialized materials; creates descriptive metadata for digital collections following national standards. Works on special projects, and performs other duties as assigned. | | Qualifications | | Equivalent to four years of full-time Library Assistant experience and a High School Diploma or equivalent certification OR three years of full-time Library Assistant experience and two years/60 units of college; OR two years of full-time Library Assistant experience and four years/120 units of college. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret overall library policies and procedures and an in-depth knowledge of library operations, policies and procedures pertaining to assigned functional area, including a solid understanding of individual work functions and the ability to adapt work procedures. Working knowledge of library collection and its organization, as well as classification schemes. Demonstrated expertise in creating and correcting bibliographic records. Thorough knowledge of external on-line databases, system and resources, including the ability to perform complex on-line searches, knowledge of institution's and library's policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources. Working knowledge of national cataloging standards and practices including AACR2, CONSER standards, Library of Congress subject headings and classification, Program for Cooperative Cataloging practices, DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard), MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data, and familiarity with RDA: Resource Description and Access. Demonstrated expertise in using library automated system(s), especially subsystem(s) pertaining to the functional area, including database maintenance. Ability to investigate and research more complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information. Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection, training employees in new work procedures, assigning work, organizing work flow and establishing priorities, reviewing work, providing input to performance evaluations and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness. Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead work flow in assigned area. Advanced knowledge of Library of Congress cataloging rules, standards and practices; OCLC and Innovative bibliographic and authority searching and editing techniques; use of online tools such as Classification Web and Cataloger's Desktop; and understanding of complex requirements for encoding holdings data preferred. Advanced knowledge of and experience with OCLC bibliographic input standards for books, continuing resources, scores, sound recordings, visual materials, computer files, maps, and archival materials. Knowledge of metadata standards and systems for digital collections. Ability to resolve complex cataloging problems. Ability to work independently and keep current with changes in cataloging standards, tools, and practices. | | Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule | | Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience.
