I check in and label misnumbered items with the enumeration on the piece, but then also place the correct enumeration or chronology in brackets. Some examples—

v. 21, no. 6 [i.e. 5] (May 2012)

v. 32 [i.e. 33], no. 7 [i.e. 1] (Jan. 2012)

Jahrg. 82, Nr. 61 [i.e. 7] (Juli 2012)

v. 45, no. 8 (Juli [i.e. Aug.] 2012)

v. 58, no. 1 (Jan. 2011 [i.e. 2012])

We check it in as labeled, adding either quotation marks or (sic) - the latter for one error, the former for a series of them.  I do add a private note on the holdings record so that once the checkin record is collapsed or deleted, we will still be aware.

There are titles - generally small and local (we get several genealogical/historical bulletins) that are all over the place.  One quarterly, for example, was fine through v. 26, no. 3 in 2009.

The next issue was v. 26, no. 1,

followed by v. 27, no. 2,

v. 28, no. 3,

v. 27, no. 4,

v. 23, no. 2.   It wobbled back and forth, peaking at v. 30, no. 1 in March 2011.  The last issue, June 2012, was v. 24, no. 2.  I do include chronology, of course, and keep all but the newest issues set to not display.

I love serials.

Sincerely,

This raises a question for me I thought I’d pose to the list members who do (or manage) check-in:

When receiving a misnumbered/misprinted issue, do you: a) check it in as what it’s printed as; b) check it in as the “correct no.”; c) delete the enumeration for check-in purposes and use only the chronology; d) other?

We originally started with a), then corrected the numbering if the error was confirmed and/or subsequently corrected (that doesn’t always happen), but now we tend to use option c) whenever possible because it’s more efficient.

Thanks for any and all thoughts or comments.

Current issue of The Nation is printed v. 294 nos. 27 & 28.  It’s a printing error; should have been v. 295 nos. 1 & 2.

Thanks to Angie in their Customer Service office for her prompt clarification!
