University of Vermont Libraries
Position Title: Director of Collection Management, Bailey/Howe
Library
Responsible To: Dean of Libraries and Learning Resources, University
of Vermont
Basic Functions:
Provides leadership, planning, and administration for all aspects of
information resource management for Bailey/Howe Library; develops
resource related processes and initiatives in collaboration with all
Libraries' departments related to the rapid changes in the
acquisitions and management of information resources in academic
libraries.
Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership, management, and overall direction as
administrator of the Bailey/Howe Library Acquisitions &
Collections Development Department, which includes managing a $4.5
million materials budget and library operations related to the
management of electronic resources, materials acquisitions both
physical and electronic, and collection development.
2. Develops, articulates, and implements vision, strategic
direction, and goals for the Department, including assessing and
transforming department processes and workflows, analyzing and
adjusting work assignments, and incorporating creative uses of
technology into departmental operations.
3. Supervises directly procedural operations for electronic resource
management including licensing, activation, link resolution,
troubleshooting, and usage statistics for Bailey/Howe and Dana
Medical Libraries e-resources with e-resource management unit staff.
4. Serves as supervisor for two library faculty members who manage
two units, Acquisitions and Collection Development; determines
organizational structure, reporting relationships, and short- and
long-range staffing needs for 10 FTE; oversees hiring,
reappointment, and performance appraisal processes for the
department; coaches, mentors, and supports career development goals
of departmental personnel. The Acquisitions Unit serves as a
procurement center for both Bailey/Howe and Dana Medical Libraries.
5. Provides leadership in planning for long-term access and storage
of collections housed both onsite and in off-site storage facilities
for UVM Libraries, including Dana Medical Libraries and Research
Collections.
6. Collaborates with related Departments to assess and improve
centralized collection management services.
7. Manages change effectively by keeping abreast of best practices
and current trends in scholarly communication, collection
management, and preservation in higher education.
8. Participates in organization-wide planning and policy development
as a member of the UVM Libraries Dean's Council and builds strong
collaborative relationships with directors of other library
departments in support of library programs and initiatives.
9. Participates in the development and expansion of the Libraries'
digital collections and initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or international
equivalent; five years of professional experience, including
progressively responsible management and supervisory experience; two
years budget management experience; strong understanding of current
scholarly communication and publishing trends, evolving business
models for library acquisitions, and budget management principles
and techniques, demonstrated through substantive collection
development experience in an academic research environment;
experience in managing or troubleshooting electronic resources;
effective team leadership experience; excellent interpersonal and
written communication skills; flexibility and ability to operate in
a complex and rapidly changing environment; demonstrated ability to
work effectively and collaboratively with library constituencies and
staff; commitment to diversity and inclusion, to be demonstrated in
writing in the cover letter or separate statement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Working knowledge of the Ex-Libris Voyager Integrated Library
System, SFX and Primo; experience working in higher education;
record of success in the innovation of library services; strong
record of professional activity in areas related to
responsibilities; project management skills; experience with
contract negotiation and licensing.
