ALCTS webinar: Datasets for Publication: Standards and Issues

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.
Description: Increasingly scholars and researchers are demanding access to the underlying data that supports the conclusions in published materials. In response, publishers and a variety of other organizations are publishing datasets either as standalone products or attached to publications. There are many open questions about how the information community will deal with these resources. Traditional bibliographic, discovery, citation and preservation tools are not well equipped to address these new content types.
OECD has implemented a metadata schema for data objects which is compatible with existing bibliographic management and citation systems, making it possible to cite and manage published datasets and tables using the same tools used to manage journal articles and books. This initiative has made it possible for search engines, abstracting and indexing services and library catalogues to reference data sets.
The webinar will explore some of the issues around data citation, data attribution, and the linking of data to the publication process. In addition, the webinar will share information on the OECD's experience and highlight issues related to data citation and linking on the OECD iLibrary.
A discussion of several industry initiatives related to data publication, including the NISO/NFAIS Supplementary Materials Recommended Practice project and the CODATA/ICSTI Task Force on Data Citation will also be included.
Learning Outcomes: Attendees will learn what the issues around data citation in the publication process. They will also obtain practical information based on experience from OECD's iLibrary.
Audience: Anyone interested in learning how to handle datasets for publication and in the development of standards to manage datasets.
Presenters: Todd Carpenter is Managing Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), a non-profit membership association that fosters the development and maintenance of standards that facilitate the creation, persistent management, and effective interchange of information used in publishing, research, and learning. Throughout his career, Todd has served in a variety of roles with organizations that connected the publisher and library communities. Prior to joining NISO, Todd had been Director of Business Development with BioOne an aggregator of online journals in the biological sciences. He has also held management positions at The Johns Hopkins University Press, the Energy Intelligence Group, and The Haworth Press. Todd is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a masters degree from the Johns Hopkins University.
Terri Mitton is the Data Products Project Manager at the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international organization which is one of the largest publishers of economic statistics and policy information in the world. Terri contributed to the OECD publishing white paper, “We Need Publishing Standards for Datasets and Data Tables” which examines the problems with data discoverability and citations and proposes a remedy in creating industry standards for bibliographic dataset metadata and linking. In her role at OECD, Terri has led various initiatives to build new and improved OECD data services. Prior to joining OECD, Terri held management and project director positions at Electronic Data Systems and other consulting companies. Terri is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) ®.
