For journals going from print to online only, if we have bound volumes of that journal, we will rely on the print record.  A link to the online full-text of the journal  is generated by our openURL resolver, which checks the ISSN in the record against our knowledgebase of available full-text options.  This way we don’t have to maintain and update static links in catalog records.  We just focus on keeping our knowledgebase up to date.  We will import an online record and attach the PO to this, but the online record is suppressed.  Patrons will only see one record in the catalog—the print record.

For titles that are print+online, we rely on the print record and attach the PO to this.  We do not import an online record.  The link to online full-text options is taken care of by our openURL resolver.

For titles that are going online only and we are not retaining any print, we close out the print PO, suppress the print record, import an online record and attach a PO to the online record.

We also import online records for titles contained in stable packages like JSTOR.  The PO is attached at the package level—we do not attach POs to the individual titles.

Subject: Switching print journals to online-only

We are beginning to switch more of our print journal titles to online and need to come up with coherent procedures for making the change.  I would be interested in hearing from others about how they do this.

Do you catalog the new format as a new title, or do you use the existing bibliographic record?  Do you close the order for the print title and create a new order for the online version, or do you adapt the print order record to reflect the new situation?

Thanks for your input.
