ALCTS webinar: Introduction to Sears Subject Headings: II
This session is a follow-up to the November 10, 2010 session
Introduction to Sears Subject Headings: Part I.
Date: December 8, 2010
Time: All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 2pm
Eastern, 1pm Central, noon Mountain, and 11am Pacific Time.
Description: Do you want to understand more complex
constructions of Sears Subject Headings used in bibliographic records? Do you
want to understand Sears better for catalog record creation, to evaluate your
vendor records, or for searching subjects in your catalog? Take a closer look at
Sears Subject Headings! This webinar focuses on using Sears and constructing
headings in your own library. Challenging subjects are covered. The use of the
20th edition and other online tools is explained. This webinar will also
compare and contrast Library of Congress Subject Headings and the Sears Subject
Headings.
Presenter: Sara Rofofsky Marcus is the Electronic Resources
/Web Librarian at Queensborough Community College. In 2009 she received a
Samuel Lazerow Fellowship for research on Sears subject headings and she is
currently completing this research. In 2009/2010 she also received the
Professional Staff Congress of the City University of New York (PSC-CUNY) grant
to study the Sears List. She has taught cataloging and classification at Queens
College and Rutgers University and has cataloged and automated libraries using
both LCSH and Sears.
Audience: These webinars will be of interest to anyone
interested in learning more about subject cataloging with a focus on the Sears
List as opposed to LCSH. No expertise is needed. School librarians, special
librarians with general materials in their collections, public librarians, and
anyone who just wants to know more about subject headings and cataloging will
benefit from these two webinars.
