AIP Applied Physics Journals
Top the Thomson Reuters Rankings Again in 2009

Melville, NY, June 18, 2010 - The outstanding performance of American Institute
of Physics journals in 2009-most notably Applied Physics Letters (APL) and
Journal of Applied Physics (JAP)-highlights AIP’s continued dominance of the
105 journals tracked in Thomson Reuters’ Applied Physics category. All told,
AIP journals produced nearly one quarter of the articles in the field last year,
and received almost 40% of all the cited references in the category. These
impressive numbers are among the figures reported yesterday in the 2009 Journal
Citation Reports® Science Edition (Thomson Reuters, 2010). Applied Physics
Letters and Journal of Applied Physics once again ranked as the first and second
most highly cited journals in their category. APL (apl.aip.org), the most highly
cited journal in Applied Physics, garnered 186,353 citations during 2009 and JAP
(jap.aip.org) received 115,445.

“The long-term value and relevancy of APL and JAP is made evident by the
number of citations they receive, perennially placing them among the most highly
cited in their field,” said John Haynes, AIP’s Vice President of Publishing.
“Led by these two prestigious publications-which rank as the second and third
largest science journals in the world-AIP content has grown by more than half in
the past decade. The rankings of APL and JAP are perhaps even more impressive in
light of the fact that more than 7,300 journals are indexed in the Journal
Citation Reports.”

AIP is also pleased to announce the results of JCR rankings for a number of its
other highly respected publications:

● The Journal of Chemical Physics (jcp.aip.org) was the most highly cited of
the 33 journals in Atomic, Molecular, and Chemical Physics, coming close to
equaling the total number of citations of the next three journals combined. Of
all 336 physics journals in the JCR, JCP was the fourth most highly cited, with
a total of more than 175,000 citations.

● Biomicrofluidics (bmf.aip.org) saw a 25% jump in impact factor to 2.895,
placing it solidly in the top 5 in Fluids & Plasmas in just its second year
being tracked by Thomson Reuters.

● Physics Today (www.physicstoday.org), AIP’s flagship magazine, also saw a
significant rise in its impact factor of more than 20% to 4.437.

● Physics of Plasmas (pop.aip.org) was again the most highly cited journal
dedicated entirely to plasma physics.

● Physics of Fluids (pof.aip.org) was the second most highly cited of the 123
journals in Mechanics and the third most highly cited of 28 journals in Fluids &
Plasmas.

● Review of Scientific Instruments (rsi.aip.org) is the third most highly
cited of the 56 journals in Instruments & Instrumentation.

● Journal of Mathematical Physics (jmp.aip.org) enjoyed a more than 20%
increase in its impact factor and, as it has for many years, posted a half-life
of >10 years.

“Look across our entire program and the story is the same-AIP journals count
the top researchers in their fields as Editors, editorial board members, and in
particular, as authors and referees,” said Mark Cassar, AIP’s Publisher of
Journals and Technical Publications. “As a result, it’s really no surprise
that our citation rankings are consistently high. This demonstrates quite
clearly that a large number of researchers across a broad range of disciplines
are building upon the work published in AIP journals. At this time we thank all
of our authors, editors, and referees for their continued support.”

About AIP
The American Institute of Physics is a federation of 10 physical science
societies representing more than 135,000 scientists, engineers, and educators
and is one of the world’s largest publishers of scientific information in
physics. Offering full-solution publishing services for scientific societies and
for similar organizations in science and engineering, AIP pursues innovation in
electronic publishing of scholarly journals. AIP publishes 12 journals; two
magazines, including its flagship publication Physics Today; and the AIP
Conference Proceedings series. Its online publishing platform Scitation hosts
nearly two million articles from more than 185 scholarly journals and other
publications of 28 learned society publishers.

University of Chicago Press Journals Earn Top Impact Factor Rankings

The latest Journal Citation Reports (JCR) by Thomson Reuters again place The University of Chicago Press journals at the top of their fields. Fifteen of the thirty-two Press journals rated have impact factors in the top ten of their respective categories, with eight journals ranking in the top five.

Calculated each year, JCR impact factors measure how often articles in a given journal are cited in other peer reviewed publications.

For the third straight year The American Historical Review ranked first in the "History" category, and was joined at the top this year by The Journal of Modern History (fourth) and the Journal of British Studies (sixth).

Other journals ranked in the top five include The American Journal of Sociology (second in "Sociology"), Journal of Labor Economics (third in "Industrial Relations & Labor"), Clinical Infectious Diseases and Journal of Infectious Diseases (second and fourth respectively in "Infectious Diseases"), and Ethics (third in "Ethics")

"While impact factors shouldn't be considered the lone measure of a journal's quality, we're nonetheless very pleased that our journals consistently score well," said Everett Conner, Journals Division Manager. "I'm very proud of our journal editors, editorial boards, peer reviewers, and contributors who continue to produce important and enduring scholarship in a wide variety of disciplines."

Cambridge University Press has again hit a high in the recent Thomson
Reuters 2009 Journal Citation Reports®
with CUP titles Behavioral and Brain Sciences and Microscopy and
Microanalysis (Published for the Microscopy
Society of America) both ranked as number 1 in their categories for a
second consecutive year. Overall,
Cambridge journals have also seen a robust average increase in Impact
Factor of almost 14%.
These strong performances are consistent across our publishing programme.
Cambridge’s Humanities and
Social Science journals saw an average increase of 18%, performing well
against a 4.3% average increase in
the SSCI, and our Science, Technology and Medicine journals increased by
10% in comparison to a 2.8%
average increase in the SCI.

Over a quarter of Cambridge journals ranked appear within the top 10 of
their categories including Journal of
Fluid Mechanics, Proceedings of the Nutrition Society (Published on behalf
of The Nutrition Society),
Psychological Medicine, Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics, American Political
Science Review (Published for the
American Political Science Association), The China Quarterly (Published for
the School of Oriental and African
Studies), International Organization (Published on behalf of the
International Organization Foundation) and The
Journal of African History.

There are seven Cambridge Journals receiving Impact Factors for the first
time, including Journal of K-Theory
(Published for Independent Scholarly Online and Print Publishing), The
Review of Symbolic Logic (Published for
the Association of Symbolic Logic), European Review of Economic History
(Published for the European Historical
Economics Society), Journal of African Law (Published for the School of
Oriental and African Studies), Japanese
Journal of Political Science, Language Variation and Change and Nordic
Journal of Linguistics (Published for The
Nordic Association of Linguists).

High Performances from Individual Journals
In the SCI, two journals in particular saw considerable increases in their
Impact Factors. Glasgow Mathematical
Journal (Published for the Glasgow Mathematical Journal Trust) rose by 128%
to 0.629 compared with an
average increase in Mathematics of 12.4%. Neuron Glia Biology gained an
Impact Factor of 1.938 - an increase
of 107% compared to an average increase of 0.2% in the Neurosciences
category. In the SSCI, the Impact
Factors of American Political Science Review (Published for the American
Political Science Association),
Continuity and Change and Language and Society all rose by over 80% each.
