We've worked with our Graduate Studies Office to
develop an e-submission process for master's theses whereby I upload
them into our institutional repository. We have not yet crossed the
ProQuest area yet but will with our doctoral ones. Marilyn Williams at
UMass Amherst has information about ProQuest and institutional
agreements or understanding, particularly for open access; however, it
is best that you work out understandings locally.
We still require a bound library copy and unbound archival copy but are
hoping to do away with that. The student pays for the library copy $10.
and all other copies he/she wants.

Have you checked with your graduate division/school? They should have the
documentation spelling out the publishing requirement. Our library receives
two copies of the works - one for our university archive and one for our
general collection. These are in addition to the student's personal copies
or those required to be filed with the graduate school and the advisor.

Subject: [SERIALST] Thesis and dissertation submission
Sent by: "SERIALST: Serials in Libraries Discussion Forum" <SERIALST@list.uvm.edu>
Are any of you out there responsible for thesis and/or dissertation
submission at your universities? We use Proquest for everything except the
binding. For the bound copy (required for our library), we use a local
bindery.
Some of our students are getting the idea that they do not need to publish
their thesis or dissertation, but that they can simply submit an original
to us (the library) for binding. This circumvents Proquest (and fees)
completely, creating a situation whereby the work is not in our Proquest
“Current Research@Hofstrta” database. I think students are required to
publish their work (in our case, through Proquest), but I am unable to find
definitive documentation stating this. What do the rest of your do? Do
you require students to publish their theses/dissertations?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Sally
