We have separate funds set up
for each school or department. We also have a general periodicals budget (for
general magazines, etc.) and an electronic resources budget. Generally,
if the database is subject specific, it is placed on the serials line for that
school or department and that liaison has “control” over the
renewal/cancellation decisions for that database. Expensive or interdisciplinary
items are placed on the electronic resources budget and are reviewed by the
entire liaison group.
For each budget, we have three
lines:
·
XXX for book
and other one-time purchases
·
XXX-n for new
subscriptions (both serials and databases)
·
XXX-s for existing
subscriptions (both serials and databases)

Subject: [SERIALST] Budget Lines for Serials, Databases, and other
Electronic Resources
Hello,
We are restricting our budget, and I have a question for
you. Does anyone combine the budget lines for serials and databases into
one category such as continuing resources, or do you separate it out? What do
you find are the benefits and drawback for each?
Thank you.
