LAC is seeking a Head of the Cataloging Department at an academic institution in New Orleans, LA. Must have strong supervisory and cataloging background, preferably in an Academic environment. The Library is developing highly innovative technologies and is looking for someone who will bring enthusiasm, out-of-the-box thinking, and creativity to this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or its equivalent.
Must have at least 2 years of supervisory experience;
2-3 years experience in an academic or research library with 2 years of original cataloging using an automated cataloging system (ILS) and OCLC's World Cat.
Knowledge and experience using AACR2 Rev., LCRI, LCCS, LCSH, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic holdings and authority control.
Experience with cataloging digital resources, outsourcing cataloging, familiarity with Ex Libris Voyager and a working knowledge of metadata standards highly desirable.
Knowledge of at least one modern European language.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Detail-oriented, ability to work independently and in a team situation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform original and complex copy cataloging in all formats and in all languages.
Supervise a staff of 4 catalog librarians and the Copy Cataloging Coordinator.
Provide leadership and oversight of cataloging functions including policy development, implementation and review in conjunction with catalog librarians and copy cataloging staff and non-technical services librarians.
Work with the Head of Systems, Head of Database Management and Head of Electronic Resources Management to edit and load MARC records obtained from vendors in the online catalog.
Hire new personnel in event of vacancies.
