The recommended amount, or at least has been over my 40 years, is 5 years. Measure how much space on average that title has filled each year for about the last three years and then leave that amount for expansion. With our cramped quarters, we do not leave any space open for ceased or cancelled titles. I use the same rule for our microfilm cabinets as well. Good luck!

Subject: [SERIALST] Shifting and reorganizing

We are reorganizing and shifting back issues of our print collection. The weeding is done and we are trying to decide how much space to leave for active titles before we start shifting.  Is there a recommended amount of shelf space? Fortunately we are not short of space at the moment.

Thanks.

Marguerite
