One thing I forgot last week ... in the official box of street-league stuff,  there is a decent-quality high-vis gilet thingy, which must have been left behind at one of the fixtures last season. If it is yours ... come along and claim it.

Subject: [MDOC] MDOC Night Street league 2013-14: Round 2 - Knutsford, Thursday 14 November 2013

Dear All,

Following on from John Britton’s successful season opener at Romiley last night (thanks John!), we now offer you:    Round 2!

It’s based at the Angel Inn on King Street in Knutsford on Thursday, 14th November.

Post code:           WA16 6HQ

OSGR:                   SJ752787

There’s no parking at the pub itself, but there is plenty of off-street public parking nearby, which is free after 18:00.

·         If you’re coming from the North or West, recommended parking is on the west side of Tatton Street, WA16 6AG

·         For traffic from the South or East, recommended parking is on the east side of King Street, WA16 6DX. NB King Street is one-way Northbound.

... but there are plenty of other parking opportunities which might suit.

The Angel Inn is a Holt’s pub, so the price of a pint is pretty reasonable – and tonight there were four real ales to choose from J. [Yes, time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted!]

There’s an extensive menu, with a ‘2 for £12’ offer on a wide range of main courses: meat, fish, or veggie; and salads, omelettes or burgers.

Alternatively there’s ‘a burger and a drink’ offer at £7.75 – that’s a choice of burger with skinny fries and coleslaw, and the drink can be: a pint of draught beer, a 175ml glass of house wine, a draught soft drink, or a standard hot beverage. Pretty good!

And what of the orienteering?

Well, the style of map will be familiar to those who’ve tried this before. It’s at a scale of 1:12,500.

The 55 controls (all typical NSL controls) have been carefully selected (from a long list of 133) in locations that will tantalise and tempt, all carefully and constructively checked by Kate and Dave Bryant (to whom thanks).

And there is a small and subtle twist to the points allocation, which...

...no, sorry, I’ve said too much already.

Grahame will be back next Monday (from a weekend of orienteering in Rome!), so I’ll ask you to forward your requests for maps to him, also indicating if you might want to eat: nsl2013@mdoc.org.uk

If I’ve left out any important info, please let me know.

Also, if you’re thinking of bringing a coach party...

Hope to see y’all on the 14th!

Cheers

Ian

Subject: [MDOC] MDOC Night Street league 2013-14 - coming to a street near you!

Hi all

The eagerly-awaited 2013-14 Night Street League Series begins in Romiley on Tuesday 29th October - you may well have seen some preliminary information in the Newsletter or on the website. This will be our third series of events, which, thanks largely to our enthusiastic mappers, will take place on a number of new areas this winter

The flyer for the series is attached to this email and gives details of the venues for the first 4 events up until Christmas. It will be updated (asap!) when specific venues are chosen for the later events in the series.

Just to emphasise some of the major points :

All the events are SCORE events with a time allowance of either 40, 60, or 75 minutes using specially drawn maps. The control sites will mostly be items of street furniture (lamp posts, telegraph poles, hydrants, green boxes etc) and evidence of your visit will involve noting down some (hopefully obvious) identification mark on an answer sheet supplied at registration. There will be NO O kites and, although we plan to use SI timing for the start and finish, there will be no SI boxes at individual controls.

The controls will have a range of points value - adding an additional dimension to route choice and planning. As usual in score events, there will be penalties for exceeding the time limit.

Essential equipment : a reliable watch, compass, dibber (available for hire if necessary), pen/pencil (maps and answer sheets will be printed on waterproof paper), torch / headtorch (there MAY be a limited number available to borrow at each event) and high visibility clothing.

You may run individually - or in pairs; however, under 16s MUST be accompanied by a parent / guardian - and they must stay together at all times - ie no shadowing allowed; 16 and 17 year olds may run unaccompanied, but must have written consent from parent / guardian.

As the events form a league, scores from each event will be added together to reveal the eventual winners; your best 4 scores from the 8 events will produce your overall total. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of the Handicap Competition.

All the events will be based in Pubs / Sports Clubs - offering food at reasonable prices, if you wish to stay for a chat and post-event analysis (highly recommended!)

If you can't get to the event on the night, you can contact us to get hold of a map and question sheet. You can then run the course when convenient, submit your answers and time taken, and we'll incorporate your score into the results

As last year, we are unsure of the numbers of runners who will attend ..... SO

If you are interested in attending the Romiley event (we'll deal with the others later!), please send an email to John Britton (ajohnbritton@gmail.com) - indicating the number of maps required and whether or not you intend to eat at the pub so that we can get some idea of the number of maps we need to print, and the numbers who may wish to stay and eat.

Looking forward to the usual deluge of replies!

Grahame Crawshaw (Series Co-ordinator)
