Hi All

Our final NSL event before Christmas will take place in Marple on Tuesday the 12th of December, with the event centre at The Navigation Inn, 9 Stockport Road, Marple, SK6 6BD.

Checker John Britton has provided the following information :

Venue - The Navigation Inn - SK6 6BD

The pub (Robinson's) is just past the last of the shops as you go up the hill East through Marple centre. From Marple Station, it's a 700m walk - leave the car park by the steps in the corner, turn right steeply up the hill; take one of three lefts (the tarmac-with-pavement Arkwright Road, the unsurfaced St Martins Rd or the canal towpath) and right onto Oldknow Rd/Stockport Rd.

From their web site ... "The Navigation at Lock 13 is an historic Public House dating from around 1790 that started by serving the 'navvy's' or Navigation Engineers that built the Peak Forest Navigation, known today as the Peak Forest Canal, part of the Cheshire ring. The pub is located next to a lock, Number 13, one of 16 Locks that raise the canal by 64 metres / 209 feet, over about 1 mile in length.  A very impressive piece of engineering built over 210 years ago. In order to get the locks finished quickly and for his boats to be the first to use the canal, Samuel Oldknow, a local mill owner gave the 'navvy's' possets, a milk drink curdled with Ale and often spiced, supplied by the Navigation Pub, as an incentive to work harder. The bridge next to the Navigation is known as Posset Bridge."

Parking

The pub has a small car park adjacent (which will also feature the Start/Finish) and fits about 8 cars. Behind the pub is a 30-space pay-and-display car park which is 30p for an hour and free after 6pm. 150m West of the pub is a large ASDA car park which is effectively free after 5pm.  So, I'd recommend early arrivals to check out the adjacent parking and later arrivals to go straight into the East end of the ASDA area - there's steps out, walk past the cinema and the Navigation is on the other side of the road.

Food

Not as cheap as recent events, but there is a very new landlord and the menu is attached.

The Event

60 controls, values 20-70, penalties 2 per 3 secs (ie. 40 per min), map scale 1:10400. Very little non-road surface,  very little unlit.  A few contours (which aren't on the map) but nothing remotely as serious as Marple Bridge. Just the one major road (the A626), which splits into 3 as it approaches the centre.

As usual, we need to get an estimate of numbers of maps required, and to give the pub a chance to cope with us all ........, so please send your map and  food orders to me (grahamecrawshaw@gmail.com) by 6pm on Saturday 9th December.

Thanks

Grahame
