Hi All

In the absence of funding a small group of volunteers have pulled together to organise next year’s annual BOF Coaching Conference which each year helps to generate more active coaches in our sport and maintain coaching interest.  There is an interesting and varied programme and as it is based at MMU CREWE the Conference is particularly handy for MDOC members and people are invited to book on for one or two days.

You do NOT need to be a coach to attend...some people just like to come to the keynote talk on the Saturday or to participate in certain sessions due to their own personal interests.

The CC full programme can be found here:https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/images/uploaded/downloads/2017%20Coaching%20Conference%20programme%20for%20booking.pdf

Entry rates:-  https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/index.php?pg=home&action=news&id=MzYyNw==&rtn=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5icml0aXNob3JpZW50ZWVyaW5nLm9yZy51ay8=

Cheap entry still open.

The MDOC committee have generously stated in the recent minutes:- “The committee agreed that the Club will pay the fees for any member wishing to attend provided that they agree to play some role in coaching in the future.”

BUT remember that you do not need to be involved in coaching to attend but in that case you pay your own entry.....

The talk by Mark Nixon on Saturday is likely to help all orienteers understand what they ‘should’ be doing to become better whatever standard you are!

National Coaching Conference 2017

The biennial National Orienteering Coaching Conference will be taking place over the weekend of 14th – 15th January 2017 from 11am Saturday morning until lunchtime Sunday. Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) – Crewe Campus, Sport and Exercise Science building is the location. This is easily accessible by public transport, with accommodation close by (accommodation options are provided below). The costs are finalised at £55 for the two days of conference. This will include coffee and lunch each day. Bookings will be taken by SIEntries; details are the British Orienteering website.

The conference is co-ordinated by Vicky Thornton – thank you for volunteering to do this Vicky. Hilary Palmer is ensuring that the programme has something which will appeal to all coaches; the following sessions are on the programme:

·         Keynote speaker (Saturday): Mark Nixon, Systematic Orienteering - A top down approach to navigation. Mark is GB Technical coach.

·         Peter Roberts - 'Disabled Orienteering for All' - a practical exercise for all orienteers and coaches involving quick decision making

·         A new 2 hour workshop for any coaches who want to upgrade their licence to work in Grade D areas on the British Orienteering Coaching Safety guidelines which are 'complex, remote or mountainous'.

·         Outdoor practical sessions, including the opportunity for some park ‘O’ before the conference starts at 11am on Saturday.

·         An update on the new coaching qualifications

·         The Talent Programme - it's vision, mission, aims, targets, philosophy

·         Two extra, after lunch session on Sunday for all Teaching Orienteering tutors followed by a session for existing UKCC tutors, assessors and verifiers. Coaches who would like to become a tutor and assessor are also very welcome. We need more tutors and assessors all over the country and we need younger people to take this on!

Delegates are responsible for their own accommodation. The hotels below are within walking distance of the MMU Crewe Campus:

-          Ibis Hotel, Emperor Way, Crewe Business Park, Crewe, CW1 6BD ; this is closest.

-          Travelodge, Beswick Drive, Crewe, CW1 5NP

-          Premier Inn, Weston Road, Crewe CW1 6FX; this is furthest away.

Are you wondering if the coaching conference is for you? All are welcome, coaches, aspirant coaches, interested orienteers can all come along.

In 2015 Tania Wimberley from South Africa felt that the conference was worth the trip – read her account from the conference below.

Whilst many of the attendees travelled far to attend the 2015 BOF Coaching conference, I think it is safe to say that having come across the seas from sunny South Africa I travelled the furthest to get there. And what an absolute privilege it was to be able to attend!

The program was well structured and the sessions were informative and thought provoking, with top class presenters in the form of athletes, coaches and coach educators.  There was a great balance between indoor theory and outdoor practical activities. The later provided great hands on experience for coaching activities, but I was very grateful to get out of the cold when the sessions were finished to try thaw my fingers and toes.

The warmth and welcoming of my fellow attendees was another wonderful experience. I cannot thank the British coaches attending enough for their generosity in sharing their knowledge and experiences with me.

I had hoped to come away from the conference with both some new coaching ideas as well as a model for a coaching conference to replicate back home. I was certainly inspired by the weekend and have put some of the ideas into practice with great success in my own coaching session.  I now face the very daunting task of trying to host the first SA orienteering coaching conference. There is no way that I can replicate the wonderful weekend, but I do hope to share some of my experiences with my fellow South Africans.

Thank you all for an amazing weekend.
