Park Stewardship Program

Are you passionate about working with communities and stewarding public lands?

We are looking for someone to engage and sustain a vibrant community of stewards in the restoration of parklands within the Golden Gate National Parks!

With an understanding that active engagement in the care of parklands leads to a deeper appreciation of their value, the Park Stewardship Program works to educate the community about the value of public lands and provide meaningful service learning opportunities throughout the Golden Gate National Parks. Whether protecting endangered species, restoring historic gardens, or improving trails, community support and hands-on education is the key to maintaining and sustaining these important resources.

As the Community Programs Manager, you will work with the Associate Director of Park Stewardship to develop and expand volunteer opportunities and educational programming in connection with several active restoration sites in San Mateo county. Also working with a Restoration Manager and Specialist, you will contribute to the ecology, restoration needs, and land management techniques at specific park sites in San Mateo county.

You will become a member of a thriving park-wide stewardship network working to restore important park resources while engaging local community members in this effort. This position is dynamic, and the ideal candidate is willing to be creative, adaptable, and support future endeavors at San Mateo park sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Volunteer Program

  *   Develop and lead volunteer programs to protect and restore park sites in San Mateo county. Recruit volunteers and groups to support restoration efforts. Ensure volunteer activities meet high quality standards and that all workdays consist of meaningful and authentic work experiences.
  *   Engage communities in San Mateo County in original ways, sustain existing partnerships, and establish new relationships with relevant groups.
  *   Provide in-class presentations, service-learning programs for schools and internship opportunities for local students; support youth programming throughout San Mateo county, as needed.
  *   Lead educational and recreational site walks to engage the community on parklands.

Ecological Leadership

  *   Develop in-depth knowledge and biological expertise in the historic, current and desired conditions of San Mateo County park sites. Sites include dune, wetland, coastal prairie and scrub habitats. Understand the larger picture of each site and land management issues, including the complexity of working in areas with threatened and endangered species. Maintain responsibility for working in sensitive areas and share protocols with others.

  *   Perform site visits on a regular basis, understands site needs in relation to restoration goals. Communicate and prioritize needs with others. Independently leads field days with a small team, as needed.
  *   Work with colleagues to determine volunteer friendly projects and refine and implement restoration protocols. Focus will be on ensuring that protocols developed can be efficiently and effectively utilized by volunteers in the field. Maintain responsibility for safety and quality of work by volunteers and team. Work includes removing invasive plant species, seed collection, planting and care of plants, and general maintenance.

Community Engagement

  *   Engage park visitors and communicate about park issues and programs.
  *   Attend relevant community and agency meetings, including those involving other local land managers.
  *   Collaborate on reports to summarize accomplishments and assist with grant writing and site management reports.
  *   Write a monthly e-newsletter, support social media outreach efforts, and think of creative ways to communicate our work.
  *   Develop coordinated approach with San Mateo geographic partners and Community Engagement team for outreach and program delivery to sustain existing audiences and build new support

Management and Supervision

  *   Recruit, hire and manage interns to support program goals, in collaboration with other program managers.
  *   Closely mentor two (potentially three) interns, provide work plans, consistent feedback, and guidance for restoration and volunteer management practices.
  *   Develop and co-lead trainings for staff and interns; attend conferences to present park programs and projects, as appropriate.
  *   Maintain a safe and healthy work culture at all times.
  *   Collect and manage volunteer data.
  *   Attend relevant meetings and support all partner organizations, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience:
Volunteer Leadership and Community Engagement

  *   Relevant experience in volunteer management, enthusiasm for fostering a community and science-based stewardship program.
  *   Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, communicate and motivate volunteers of all ages; interest and ability to make programming relevant to a variety of audiences.
  *   Outstanding organizational and group management skills.
  *   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
  *   Desire to work in a team and to work with a diversity of people with different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, ages, and viewpoints.
  *   Bilingual in Spanish, a plus.

Ecological Leadership

  *   Relevant experience in ecology, habitat restoration, and/or natural resources management in San Francisco Bay Area. A strong desire to learn more and to teach others.
  *   Willing to develop a keen understanding of ecological conditions and needs, identification of plant species (native and invasive) and threatened/endangered species.
  *   Familiarity with map reading, GPS, GIS and basic mapping techniques, a plus.

  *   Enjoys working outdoors in all kinds of weather and site conditions.

Management and Supervision

  *   Exhibits confidence in self and others; inspires and motivates others to perform well; demonstrated ability to manage volunteers and interns.
  *   Takes a collaborative and inclusive approach to work. Pitches in and contributes to achieving group goals; supports everyone's efforts to succeed; balances team and individual responsibilities.
  *   Proficiency in basic computer skills including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Adobe Suite, and general database applications.
  *   Valid California driver's license and excellent driving record. Able to acquire a Class B driver's license within three months of hire date.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:

  *   Work is performed in an office and outdoor setting.
  *   Field work requires strenuous hiking in steep, off-trail field conditions in inclement weather.
  *   Ability to work in environments where exposure to poison oak, ticks, and yellow jackets is probable.
  *   Ability to lift, carry, and position objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  *   This position requires a Tuesday-Saturday schedule to accommodate volunteer programs, and the flexibility to occasionally work outside normal hours, including occasional overnight trips.  Frequent local travel will be necessary (vehicle provided).
  *   Primary office will be at Fort Funston, with frequent travel to Fort Mason.

Compensation:

  *   This is a full-time, benefited position.
  *   Compensation for this position will be commensurate with work experience, skills, and educational background. Salary is negotiable and provides opportunity for growth. Starting salary range is between $62,000 - $64,000 per year.
