Recent estimates of the total magnitude taken from COBS show some
evidence that the predicted forward scattering effect is, in fact,
happening. The attached plot shows the predicted forward scattering
(from Joe Marcus' predictions in CBET 5445) and the current estimates up
to today.

Getting good estimates will be increasingly difficult as the elongation
rapidly reduces as the comet heads towards conjunction on October 9 but,
so far, it seems to have been remarkably well-behaved. Let's hope that
this continues and we get a great display in the evening after October 10.
